Hey, I’d like to share my favorite blog post of all time- 2011 Vision Board. Last year I put together a “board” that has images of all my dreams and desires. In the future I’d like to post more personal entries so that you can see where and how my life has improved since being more open with my heart and mind. If you’re thinking about all your goals for the year, have a look at this post on creating your vision board for success. Enjoy! – M

2010…Oh how I am so glad that last year is gone and never to return. 2010 was an incredibly difficult year for me. Every month was like a soap opera playing out, from January right on down to December. I had, not one but, two immediate family members pass away back to back (one in February and the other in March). A cancer scare in April, surgery in May, and a whole lot of sickness, recovery, PAIN and overall grief from June until December. Overall, I am grateful for (most of) those experiences and to be here still standing; And that my passion and ABILITY to perform as a photographer has not waned in any way. Trust and believe, I don’t take anything for granted these days.

With the New Year like a field of fresh snow, most folks are trying to seize the opportunity and use it as…

Boxing Day at Treasure Beach Jamaica

I was fortunate to visit Treasure Beach with my family for the first time during my trip Jamaica this past holiday. This beach is only an hour away from my residence along the south coast. It was a beautiful day. However, once we arrived we got a bit of news that made us have to turn around. So I didn’t do anything, but order a mixed drink at Jack Sprat, walk to the beach, looked around a bit, then got back in the van. We drove all the way to Linstead to tend to family business. Here are some photos of my short visit to Treasure Beach with some details of the bar at Jack Sprat.

There’s a lot of kitschy old memorabilia hung on the pillars around the bar. The ground serves as a reflector in this shot.

They had an old-time juke box!

Such a cute sign, one of my favorite images from the set. The colors are so “Jamaica” and i just love the juxtaposition of that photo on the bottom right (giggle).

Are You Looking For A Cheap Wedding Photographer?

I came across this screen shot of an ad a disgruntled woman posted on craigslist while searching for a “cheap” wedding photographer. if anyone has ever wondered why photography, specifically wedding photography, is so expensive please read on. This ad has lit the wedding and portrait photography industry by storm. I wonder if she “gets” it now. Thank you Nikki Wagner for responding to this woman in a dignified and detailed way.

Naples, Fort Myers and Sanibel Wedding Photographer | NikkiMayDay Photography

Earlier today my friend and fellow photographer posted a link to a craigslist ad from a woman in Seattle looking for a wedding photographer.

The woman was upset because she thought that $3000 for a wedding photographer was “wack” because all we do “is hang out at a wedding taking tons of photos and editing them” and that we are “making so much money its crazy.”

I first read this post earlier today while I was running errands and my head almost EXPLODED.  I immediately started drafting a horribly mean and punishing response in my head, BUT by the time I got home, I realized that this is probably a common misconception and that maybe I should try to EXPLAIN why photographers charge what we / they do for our / their work.

Before I post my response, I want to THANK all of my brides who appreciate my work…

A Family Shoot in Stuyvesant Heights

I really enjoyed photographing families last year. One of the last  sessions  I did was in October with Robin, Will, and her pet hens- General Tso and Potpie. Robin and I met in 2007 when she had just started The Clinton Hill Blog and I had just landed the job at PACC. We’ve kept in touch all this time and I was so thrilled to visit the family at their beautiful turn of the century home and snap a few pics for her.

Seeing Robin’s home life, I cant imagine knowing a couple that lives more sustainable and I just adore their backyard. It’s very quaint and makes for an ideal place to take photos; loads of textures (brick, wood, straw fencing, etc.) and moderate northern exposure…

…doesn’t Robin look lovely back-lit? this is one of my favorite pics! It was so tough getting this photo because i began cracking up when the hens decided to run back and forth in the background- lol.

The hens, love blueberries!

The moment Robin picked up General Tso, the hen immediately showed off her profile for me : )

I hope, if Robin decides to do a lifestyle blog, that this photo is used as a banner. The wood in the background is reclaimed from an unwanted  shed the couple found on the internet. They took it apart and used it against the divider. It makes for a unique installation and conversation piece!

I just love a happy ending, don’t you? Thanks for having me, Robin, Will, Potpie, General Tso and their sweet puppy that passed away this week- Mallow.
